Between Times

Between Times is Jack Richardson — raised in Romford, on the line where London stops being London, and now making UK garage and jungle from Shanghai.

The name is literal. Between eras: Romford gave jungle Suburban Base, Boogie Times and a decade of pirate radio, and that inheritance gets treated here as living material rather than pastiche. Between tempos: 2-step swing on one side, jungle breaks on the other, and everything the gap between them allows. Between cities: written in Shanghai, rooted in Essex, pointed at neither in particular.

The results are rhythm-first but rarely only that — chopped breaks and sub-bass carrying something damper and more atmospheric underneath, closer to Burial’s melancholy than to the dancefloor’s brighter end. Recent releases include Colourless, Who We Are and Nights, alongside Emanate, remixed by Submerse for London’s Dream Schemes.
